OUR FESTIVAL CONCEPT<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”juicy_pink” css_animation=”fadeInLeft”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1699084567462{margin-bottom: 40px !important;}” el_class=”narrow”][vc_column][vc_column_text]\u201cOff to adventure\u201d, sings the hidalgo, a kind of Spanish knight, in Robert Schumann’s song of the same name. This is the spirit in which HIDALGO has been taking over Munich every year since its first pilot event in 2017<\/a><\/strong> and is growing steadily. It all began with a small, enthusiastic circle of friends\u2014in the last edition of the HIDALGO Festival for Young Classical Music 2022, more than 150 people were involved on and behind the stage.<\/p>\n

The musical core of the festival is the art song. HIDALGO has now made a name for itself beyond Munich\u2014with the productions created here, HIDALGO is giving its first guest performances throughout Germany.<\/p>\n

The festival has received a great deal of media attention right from the start. \u201cHidalgo is one of the most exciting young and innovative classical music festivals with a focus on song around the world,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> writes Crescendo magazine. \u201cThe best up-and-coming singers in the coolest places in town\u201d is how Bayerischer Rundfunk sums up the festival, “classical music dusted off and modernized”<\/a><\/strong>, according to Concerti. \u201cA great organizational achievement\u201d, judges the M\u00fcnchner Merkur. The Abendzeitung experienced the music here \u201cmuch more intensely than in a normal concert hall\u201d. In 2020, it awarded us the \u201cCulture Star of the Year 2020<\/a><\/strong>\u201d. And the S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung observes simply: \u201cClassical music is alive and kicking.\u201d<\/p>\n

As guests and as an important addition to our own productions, we invite exciting artists and ensembles<\/a><\/strong> who inspire us, are current and bring something completely new to Munich. We handpick formats that break with rules, genres and expectations at a high musical level.<\/p>\n

Our trademark\u2014in addition to the interdisciplinary productions\u2014are the unusual locations that we select during the festival period in late summer and fall. For us, the location is a central part of the art experience. We don’t play in a concert hall, but in parking garages, nightclubs or hair salons. In this way, we create our own concert space for an evening. We turn all the senses of the artists and audience to maximum absorption. There is no pattern with HIDALGO. “The idea is to take the art song out of its somewhat cultivated, elitist corner without compromising on quality, to get closer to the emotional core of the music and to appeal to a younger audience with scenic forms. The organizers surrounding Tom Wilmersd\u00f6rffer, Philipp Nowotny and conductor Johanna Malangr\u00e9 succeeded in doing this particularly well in the difficult third round of this small but noble festival this year. And we hope that they will succeed again in the fourth year<\/span>.”<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u201cIn view of the coronavirus crisis, the theme of the HIDALGO Festival 2020 is almost prophetic: \u201cFailure\u201d in all its facets. The art song as a timeless and text-based medium serves HIDALGO as the core and starting point of the exploration. Boundaries between genres and artistic genres are dissolved, high culture meets niche.\u201d <\/em><\/h3>\n

The jury was impressed by this consistent and interdisciplinary way of thinking about a tradition that is being redesigned with highly contemporary content and creative approaches. Even at its premiere, the innovative and contemporary program and venue design [of HIDALGO] proved that the new positioning of the genre of art song leads it back to its origins, which lie at the beginning of the bourgeois age: it has always been the very individual and direct form of artistic expression\u2014beyond forms, conventions and institutions.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n
